BACKGROUND

VenCap International plc is a venture capital fund of funds located in Oxford and comprises a small team of 25 professionals. The team is a blend of both experienced heads and relatively new joiners. The team is led by Tim Cruttenden as Chief Executive Officer, David Clark as Chief Investment Officer, and Simon Lasseter as Chief Finance Officer who make up a combined experience of close to 90 years. Tim and David’s extensive experience has been a significant contributing factor to the success of their current investment strategy, which they adopted in 2006.

Their primary investment strategy centres around the idea that the VC industry primarily generates value through a select few companies founded each year. Historically, these companies have consistently received early-stage funding from a handful of VC firms (such as Accel, Index, a16z, Lightspeed, and Sequoia). Their investment team specializes in sourcing and gaining access to these firms for their investors. They refer to this select group of VC firms as their “Core Managers.” VenCap has recently added to its investment team with the view to offer a secondary and a co-investment strategy to its clients.

The fundraising team at VenCap is relatively new and was initiated with Heinrich Riehl, CFA joining as Director of Fundraising in 2020 to spearhead the launch of VenCap 16. The Fundraising Team has since expanded, with Alex Burnett’s transition to support client services in 2023, the addition of Jack Lee in 2023 to establish VenCap’s presence in Singapore and Catherine Halford-Riera in May 2024 to develop the UK market. The VenCap 16 programme has proven to be a success, with raising $330 million between end of 2021 and early 2023. In their fundraising efforts, the team has identified a strong demand from private investors for private markets. However, the investors often lack a deep understanding of venture capital or access to the very best VC managers required in the VC industry. VenCap assists by offering a curated selection of 12-14 VC managers ranked among the top 25-30 globally, along with VC insights through webcasts, white papers, and Venture Days.
